Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed on the immediate urgency to save and conserve water for the present and the future generations to survive and progress as he addressed the nation on the 73rd Independence Day. PM Modi laid a lot of emphasis on the need to conserve water, the necessity of water for progress and development and for sustainable development of the future generation.
Invoking the writing of a Tamil poet-saint Thiruvalluvar, PM Modi quoted, "When water is depleted, the work of nature stalls". PM Modi said that he was surprised by the saint's important message that came many 100 years earlier and said that water crisis in the country had reached a point where that prediction came true.He said that when there is no water, then the work of the environment stops.
PM Modi pointed out to another anecdote to explain the importance of water conservation. He spoke about how people of the Jain faith in his birthplace (Gujurat), visit Mahuri, a town that was once inhabited by a saint 100 years ago. The saint, who was born to a farmer, had renounced his life in accordance to the Jain principles, had written that water will be sold in general stores in the near future.
"Today, we buy water from the stores, just like the saint predicted 100 years back. From where to where have we come so far? Thousand years ago no one would have imagined water shortage. We should not stop ourselves from acting now. We should follow water conservation, not just like a government policy, but like a people's movement, like how Swacch Bharat Abhiyan spread across the country, and the nation should progress on the interests of the people and their aspirations", said PM Modi.
PM Narendra Modi while addressing the nation from Red Fort on the occasion of 73rd Independence Day remembered the martyrs who sacrificed their lives to seek freedom from the colonisers. He said that he respectfully salutes them all for their sacrifices.
During his speech, PM Narendra Modi also remembered those affected due to the floods leading to distress in several parts of the country.
"On this holy occasion of Independence Day, we remember those who sacrificed their lives for our country, who gave up their youths languishing in prisons, who embraced their death sentence, those who used Satyagraha and filled the cry for freedom through non-violent means under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, to those, I respectfully salute them for dedicating their lives for the country. I remember and salute today for each and every citizen who contributed towards India's safety and security," he said.
"On the occasion of the anniversary of India's Independence Day, in many parts of the country, people are affected by floods. I stand with those people who lost their relatives due to flood. I express my condolences towards their families. NDRF and other state and central forces are working day and night to alleviate their troubles and bring the situation to normalcy," he said.
