International Yoga Day 2019: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Leads Yoga Day Celebrations At Parliament, Other Leaders Join In

On the occasion of 5th International Yoga Day on Friday, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla led celebrations at the Parliament along with other parliamentarians and the staff members in the premises of the Parliament House complex. 

Along with staffers, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi, BJP MPs Locket Chatterjee, Poonamben Maadam and Bhupendra Yadav, and former aviation minister Suresh Prabhu were among those who participated in the celebrations at the Parliament premises.

Earlier on Friday morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the Yoga Day celebrations and performed asanas with around 40,000 enthusiasts at the Prabhat Tara ground, Ranchi. Highlighting the importance of yoga, President Ram Nath Kovind said that yoga should be made an integral part of life. He also said that since 2015 Rashtrapati Bhavan is celebrating Yoga Day.

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also participated in an early morning yoga session at Rajpath and said that yoga was one of the biggest achievements of cultural diplomacy by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 

"It was Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who helped get Yoga international recognition. This was one of the biggest achievements of his cultural diplomacy," Rajnath said here after attending the yoga session along with a large number of people," said Rajnath Singh.

Many other politicians also participated during the Yoga sessions at the occasion. BJP working president JP Nadda also performed yoga, along with other party leaders and workers at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay park near the party's headquarters. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar performed Yoga in Rohtak, Haryana. 

Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice originated in India The International day for Yoga was declared unanimously by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The concept of International Day of Yoga was first proposed by the Prime Minister Modi during his speech at the UNGA, on 27 September 2014. The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his UN address suggested the date of 21 June, as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares a special significance in many parts of the world.
