UPDATE: Opposition has mulled that only after hearing the statement of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Rajya Sabha (11.00 am) and Lok Sabha (12.00 pm) they’ll decide their next strategy. The Opposition is also mulling over knocking on the doors of President office on the Kashmir matter.

Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad called a meeting of all opposition Rajya Sabha members in his chamber to discuss the Kashmir issue at 10.00 am on Monday.

Earlier on Monday, Ghulam Nabi Azad and other MPs Anand Sharma, Ambika Soni, and Bhubaneswar Kalita gave Adjournment Motion notice in the Rajya Sabha over the Kashmir issue.

Speaking to the media the Rajya sabha MP said:

"Thousands of forces have sacrificed their lives, lakhs of our civilians have sacrificed their lives to unite Kashmir with India. Everything was going fine, but the BJP created havoc, everyone was doing fine, but immediately they did this ruckus in Kashmir for power. Just like the PM dreamt of demonetisation and it continues to affect the country, he dreamed of the same in Kashmir. The country has regressed back to 70 years, they are not at all focussed on Kashmir's history.

"They are putting an end to democracy in the state and the country. They have put three ex-CMs on house arrest. If they arrest mainstream politicians who defend the idea of India, then this is a murder of democracy. They want to end Kashmir on an economical level. They are hurting the tourism industry during its peak period. We will take this issue up in Parliament. We will put pressure on the government to answer in both the Houses," he said.

Backdrop of Kashmir issue

This comes two days after Centre's order of deployment of over 30,000 troops in Jammu and Kashmir and security advisory to Amarnath Yatra pilgrims to return from the valley immediately. This was followed by fearmongering by Jammu and Kashmir politicians like PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti and a few Congress leaders over the state's special status given by Article 35A and Article 370.
