J&K: Rajouri district administration launches pink vehicles for girls

On International Girl Child Day, the Rajouri district administration in association with the Motor Vehicle Department launched 6 pink vehicles for girls.

On the occasion of the International Girl Child Day 2019, the Rajouri district administration in association with the Motor Vehicle Department launched 6 pink vehicles on Friday. The purpose of this initiative is to introduce a safe and dignified travel option to girls and women in the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). The District Development Commissioner (DDC), Rajouri, Mohammad Aijaz Asad, in the presence of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Yougal Manhas, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADP) Rajouri, Sher Singh, and other officials launched these vehicles. According to DDC Azad, the decision was taken in the wake of a survey which indicated that girl students felt uncomfortable commuting in overcrowded vehicles.

He said, "Transport department conducted a survey in which it came out that girl students were facing problems in commuting due to overcrowded public transport vehicles. So, keeping that in mind we launched these vehicles. This initiative is intrinsic for the empowerment of girl child.”

'Utilize this service to the fullest'

The 8-seater vehicles will operate between Old Bus stand to GMC and AH, New Bus stand to GMC and AH and Old Bus stand to Khandli. This service will be available from 8 am to 8.30 pm every day. DDC Asad also talked about the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ programme of the Central government. Furthermore, the Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO), Anzar Ahmed urged the girls to take advantage of this service for their betterment. 

“We will try our best to take more initiatives of this sort. I would urge the women to utilize this service to the fullest because this service has been initiated for their betterment," Ahmed remarked.

'Congratulate the women'

A rally was held to create awareness in this regard from PWD Dak Bungalow Rajouri to Government Girls Model High Secondary School. SSP Manhas also addressed the gathering and opined that the right to proper and safe transportation was a part of a dignified life for a woman.  

"I would like to congratulate the women here on this special occasion. Required and feasible routes have been considered which will be covered by these vehicles in order to provide ease of travel to the women. I think the right to proper and safe transportation is part of a dignified life for a woman,” SSP Manhas commented.
