Jadavpur University Professor who compared women's virginity to 'sealed bottles' on Facebook asked not to take classes in varsity

Professor Kanak Sarkar who had made a sexist comment comparing women's virginity to sealed bottles and food packets has been asked to not take classes at the Jadavpur University on the recommendations of Student-Teacher Committee of the Department.

Professor Kanak Sarkar who had made a sexist comment comparing women's virginity to sealed bottles and food packets has been asked to not take classes by the Department of International Relations at the Jadavpur University on the recommendations of Student-Teacher Committee. 

The letter reads: "In view of the recommendation of the Student-Teacher Committee of the Department, Prof. Kanak Sarkar is divested of his teaching duties with immediate effect."

The letter also says that arrangements for a substitute will be made in a meeting held on January 18, 2019.

Sources have said that there will be a meeting with the chairperson of National Commission of Women on Thursday. The next step with will be decided after that. Jadavpur Students-teachers committee has taken this decision.

In an absolutely shocking, misogynist and sexist comment, Professor Kanak Sarkar from the Jadavpur University had compared a virgin girl to a sealed bottle in a Facebook post. The comments were posted by Kanak Sarkar. And not just one, Sarkar has posted many controversial Facebook posts regarding a woman's virginity.

“Many boys remain fool. They are not aware of virgin girl as wife. Are you willing to buy a broken seal while purchasing a bottle of cold drink or a packet of biscuits?” wrote Kanak Sarkar, an international relations (IR) professor who has been associated with the university for two past two decades. He also sought to link “virginity” with “culture and sexual hygiene “. “A girl is biologically sealed from birth until it is opened. A virgin girl means many things accompanied as values, culture, sexual hygiene. To most boys virgin wife is like angel,” read his post.

Sarkar had deleted the post following the controversy and criticism he received.

Female students on Tuesday evening took to marching on the campus singing slogans "Kanak Sarkar door hatao" asking for the expulsion of the professor from the University.

Students have claimed that there have been complaints against the professor in the past. "It (the sexist comment) is one of the many complaints against him. We do not want that he passes on his patriarchial and sexist ideas to the students. We demand for his expulsion."

Calling his post “shocking” and “misogynistic”, the National Commission for Women took suo motu cognisance of it and asked the state DGP to probe the matter, take appropriate action and apprise the commission of the same.
