The Jawaharlal Nehru University's Vice-Chancellor Jagadesh Kumar's residence was attacked on Monday by 200-300 JNU students who smashed the front gate and entered his house. While VC Jagadesh Kumar was not at his residence, his wife was confined in the house by the students.
Jagadesh Kumar took to Twitter and informed about the incident. He wrote," Few hundred students have broken into my residence at JNU and have confined my wife inside the house. She is alone at home and terrified. Very unfortunate".
Last week, the JNU students initiated a hunger strike against Vice-Chancellor Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar. The students were protesting against various policies of the administration including the new prospectus which is exclusionary in nature, the online entrance examination, and scuttling of deprivation points and reservation.
Furthermore, the students called for a Mass Relay Hunger Strike on 25 March. Details of the same were put on a facebook page:
7 days of Hunger, Suffering and Pain to Safeguard JNU's Socially Accessible and Affordable Model of Higher Education being trampled upon by JNU Admin!
7 Days of Solidarity, Unity and Strength Across Universities in defence of public education!
7 Days of Utter Insensitivity and Inhuman behaviour of JNU VC, Jagadesh Kumar!
The JNU 11 have been on an indefinite hunger strike for 7 days and inresponse not a single communication has come from the JNU administration to discuss the demands and issues of the students community regarding the changes brought about in the admission policy. Instead of talking to the students, this spineless VC who cannot even confront and talk to the university students he is a VC of has resorted to calling up the parents of the JNU 11.
He probably does not know that the parents of each and every student is supporting this struggle in JNU, because the struggle is for saving the idea of a university where reservations will be implemented, where the fee structure for all courses will 283 rupees, where deprivation points will be provided to make the opportunity to study a reality for many!
If the JNU VC is so eager to talk to the parents of the JNU 11, let him talk to thousands of JNU students directly. Then, let us Meet the VC!
Join JNUSU's call for a Mass Relay Hunger Strike on 25 March. Participate widely in Feminist Faculty Collective's program 'Kya bolttu?' at 2pm following which let us meet the VC at 5pm.
