An event to honour the 20th anniversary of the Kargil Vijay Diwas was held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi on Saturday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the dignitaries who attended the event.

A special video ‘Immortals of Kargil’ was screened to showcase the story of the Kargil War.

The video, narrated by Amitabh Bachchan, shows how the defence forces protected the honour of the country with their bravery.

What sparked the war:

The 76-year-old narrates how ex-Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf created illegal infiltration into Indian territory and set up base and captured the area to break the link between Kashmir and Ladakh in 1999.

It is then narrated how the killing of Captain Saurabh Kalia, who was brilliantly leading the patrolling troupe, was the trigger to the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s anger. The PM always believed in maintaining good relations with other countries, but asserts how India is peace-loving, but will go to any extent to showcase their power to maintain this peace.

PM Vajpayee retaliates:

PM Vajpayee directed the Three Forces to retaliate. The Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force then declared war against Pakistan, and the mission was named as ‘Operation Vijay’, led by General VP Malik, Chief of Army Staff.

Current IAF Chief Wing Commander BS Dhanoa, and Squadron Leaders Ajay Ahuja, K Nachiketa, Raghunath Nambiar led a strong team of fighter pilots for the mission.

The Air Force’s ‘Operation Safed Sagar’ and the Navy’s ‘Operation Talwar’ missions set up further retaliatory measures.

The video also shows visuals and photographs of many of the defence forces officers like Captain Vikram Batra, Vice Admiral Madhvendra singh, Major General Mohinder Puri, Major Sonam Wangchuk, Grenadier Yogenda S Yadav, among others and their efforts. The delight on their faces after recapturing the territory is a visual delight. The narration also reveals how the fighters of the forces averaged just 20-25 age achieved this victory for India.
