Former Cricketer and Member of Parliament, Kirti Azad on Tuesday slammed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his government for providing free bus rides to women right before elections. Azad questioned the timing of the 'freebie rides' announced and asked, "Why wasn't this done before? Why now?" Azad also compared the Kejriwal's free rides for women with the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' scheme.

The former MP on Tuesday said, "I have no problem with the free rides. I have a problem with the timing. Why now? Why not before? Why didn't the government buy any buses before? There had always been a dearth of buses. Coming to the safety of women, why did the idea dawn upon them after five years of governance? Same goes for the free rides. These are the questions they need to answer. If they were so worried about women, they should have thought about it when they came to power. Their false worry is the same as that of BJP."

Free bus rides for women

This comes after Delhi government's scheme of providing free bus and Metro rides for women in Delhi public buses was launched on Tuesday with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal wishing female residents on 'Bhai Dooj'. Under the scheme, women will be given pink tickets in Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and cluster buses to avail the scheme. Deputy CM Manish Sisodia added that the pink tickets will ensure women's safety and "increase the role of women in Delhi economy". Asserting his government’s commitment to boost security for women in the national capital, the Delhi CM on Monday said that as many as 13,000 bus marshals will be deployed from Tuesday.
