Furious netizens on Wednesday hit out at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and sternly told her that 'she needs to run her own state' after a video of her watching a dance performance in Darjeeling a day after the Majerhat bridge collapse went viral. Mamata Banerjee was attending an event on the occasion of Teachers Day, while rescue operations are still on after a section of the bridge in South Kolkata collapsed on Tuesday, killing at least one person, and injuring almost two dozen others.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will land in Kolkata on Wednesday evening around 5:30 pm and will immediately head towards the accident site and look into the matter. Earlier on Tuesday, she had issued a statement from Darjeeling stating that she was unable to make it back to Kolkata due to unavailability of flights on Tuesday evening.
Earlier on Tuesday, a section of Majerhat bridge had collapsed. One person lost his life and several others received injuries in the incident. As per the latest figures:
While inspecting the collapse site, West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi had said that the bridge deserved better maintenance and highlighted that had been a complaint regarding a pit on the bridge, adding that the matter requires investigation. When West Bengal's Urban Development Minister Firad Hakim was questioned about the possible cause of the mishap, he offhandedly said:
"If I had to know that, I would have needed an Engineering degree".
Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) and present Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mukul Roy had attacked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the Majerhat bridge collapse, claiming she and her party are to be held responsible for the incident.
Roy said, "State Government and CM is responsible for this bridge collapse. They are saying beautification of city is on, but repair work of old constructions is not on her mind. State govt should take complete responsibility of this collapse."
The collapse took place in the afternoon when a huge section of the bridge came down during peak traffic hours. The first visuals of the collapsed bridge showed a section of the flyover having cleanly collapsed, with the vehicles that were likely on it at that time that it fell still on hand. Six fire engines were immediately rushed to the location. The Kolkata Police Commissioner also rushed to the spot, even as roads leading to the bridge were cordoned off.
Majerhat bridge serves as a railway overbridge near the Majerhat railway station. The bridge connects Alipore to Behala, Taratalla and Chetla.
