A home guard of the Kolkata Police was arrested on Friday for allegedly smuggling in illegal firearms, police said. Bapan Karmakar was arrested from Bhabanipur in Gopal Nagar police station area in North 24 Parganas district, they said.

Karmakar was arrested after one Souvik Dafadar was held earlier this week with an illegal firearm, police said. While interrogating Dafadar, police found that he procured the firearm from Karmakar, they said. This comes two days after a police officer was arrested along with three others for allegedly smuggling out 18 seized firearms from the 'malkhana' of a police station in Jhargram district.
