Lt Col Jyoti Sharma becomes the Indian Army's first woman Judge Advocate General officer to be deployed on a foreign mission. She will be posted in Seychelles.

In what can be called a proud moment for the nation, Lieutenant Colonel Jyoti Sharma was appointed as the Indian Army's first woman Judge Advocate General officer to be deployed on a foreign mission.

Lieutenant Colonel Jyoti will be appointed as the military legal expert with the Government of Seychelles. Her main role will comprise of updating the officials of the Government of Seychelles on the matters of defence, and military acts. 

In September this year, Wing Commander Anjali Singh resumed charge in the Indian Embassy in Russia as India's first female military diplomat to be posted in any of the missions abroad. Singh's role in the foreign mission will be that of a Deputy Air Attache. Wing Commander S Dhami also became India's first female officer to become the Flight Commander of a flying unit.

The position of a Flight Commander is considered to be the second in command of the unit, meaning, that she is the number two in the unit after the Commanding Officer.

Army working on including women in the Military Police Corps

The Indian Army is also planning to include women in the Military Police Corps. In the month of April, the army had started the process of inducting women as Jawans. The Army also started online recruitment registration for recruiting women in the Corps Of Military Police.

Women will be inducted in a graded manner to eventually comprise 20% of total Corps of Military Police.
As of now, women are allowed in limited fields of the Army such as medical, legal, educational, signals and engineering wings.
According to government data, the Indian Army has 3.80 per cent of its workforce as women, the Air Force has 13.09 per cent and the Navy six per cent. Out of all the three branches of the defence force, the Indian Air Force currently employs the highest percentage of women. It has also commissioned women officers to fly fighter jets.
