Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari announces financial relief for affected farmers

Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari on Saturday took stock of the damage caused to crops due to unseasonal rains in the state in the months of October and November. He announced financial relief in the form of Rs.8,000 per hectare up to 2 hectares for Kharif crops and Rs.18,000 per hectare up to 2 hectares for horticulture or perennial crops. Furthermore, the Governor declared that the land revenue of the affected region would be exempted. Additionally, the school and college fees of the children of affected farmers have been waived off. Governor Koshyari directed the administration to immediately disburse the relief.

Former CM visits Governor

On Thursday, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis paid a visit to the Governor requesting him to release funds to the affected farmers. He also called for the reopening of the CM relief fund. Also, Shiv Sena, NCP, and Congress leaders were set to meet the Governor at 4.30 pm on Saturday to discuss issues related to the welfare of farmers. However, this meeting was cancelled.

Maharashtra power tussle

Amid the farmer crisis in Maharashtra, government formation has been stalled owing to the breakdown of the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance. As no party could furnish enough letters of support from MLAs for government formation, the Governor contended that it was impossible to constitute a stable government in the state. Thus, President's Rule was imposed in Maharashtra on Tuesday. Hectic parlays are going on in NCP, Shiv Sena, and Congress camps to forge a post-poll alliance for the formation of government in the state. NCP supremo Sharad Pawar is set to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Sunday to take a call on the Common Minimum Programme (CMP).
