Abrogation of Article 370

On August 5, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government introduced the proposal to abrogate Article 370, which gave special status to the people of J&K. With J&K special status revoked, people from the rest of the world acquired the rights to buy lands and property in the Union Territory and settle there. Along with the move to revoke Article 370, Home Minister Amit Shah also introduced the J&K Reorganisation Bill which bifurcated the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories – J&K (with a legislature), and Ladakh (without a legislature). Supporting the Centre's move to abrogate Article 370, Amit Shah had on August 5 said that it was because of the provisions of Article 370 that democracy could never be established in Jammu & Kashmir. The Home Minister has time and again maintained that revocation of the special status has paved the way for development in Jammu and Kashmir and it will be a "final nail in the coffin of terrorism"

Opposition on the move

While there has been a section of society backing the Centre's move to revoke Article 370, there is an array of political leaders opposing the move. Rajya Sabha Opposition leader Ghulam Nabi Azad from the Congress party had earlier led the Opposition’s tirade against the Centre’s move. However, surprisingly, AAP and BSP had voted in favour of the Bill.
