Maharashtra: Potholes claim 21-year-old doctor's life in Thane

A 21-year-old woman is the latest victim of the potholes after she was run over by a vehicle in Thane; the woman fell down from a two-wheeler after it slipped

A 21-year-old woman is the latest victim of the dire situation of the roads in Maharashtra, the State that would go to polls in a few weeks. The woman, who worked as a doctor, was run over by a vehicle after she fell off her two-wheeler that slipped on a pothole in Maharashtra's Thane District, the police said on Thursday.

Potholes claim another life in Thane

The incident occurred on Wednesday night when Neha Shaikh was on her way back home from Bhiwandi. Shaikh, a resident of Kudus Village was scheduled to get married next month. She had visited Bhiwandi Town to purchase some things for her wedding. According to Assistant Police Inspector Mahesh Sagde, Shaikh was riding pillion on the two-wheeler rode by her brother. Apparently, during the journey, she lost her balance and fell on the road after the vehicle skidded on a pothole at the Dugadh Junction.

One of the trucks passing by crushed Neha Shaikh under its wheels. However, the vehicle driver fled the accident scene. The police have registered an offence under the Indian Penal Code Section 304A (causing death by negligence), the inspector added. Even so, no one has been arrested as of now. Following the incident, several members of the Shramjeevi Sanghatana, an outfit working for tribal welfare, rushed to the Angaon toll booth, near which the mishap took place, and forced it to shut down around midnight.

The organisation's youth wing President Pramod Pawar made claims that potholes claimed several lives this year and he also demanded a case to be registered against the company which was given the contract of road construction and maintenance and the Public Works Department (PWD). Pawar has said that they will not allow the toll booth to function and will continue with their "peaceful agitation" until their demands are met.

Maharashtra polls on October 21

Maharashtra, which has 288 Assembly seats, will go to polls on October 21, 2019. Maharashtra assembly elections will be held in a single-phase and the counting procedure would be conducted on October 24. The last date of nomination is on October 4. EC has informed that the parties in Maharashtra had wanted the polls to be concluded by Dhanteras.
