Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday lashed out at Home Minister Amit Shah and said that divisive politics will not work in West Bengal. This comment form Mamata Banerjee was followed by  Amit Shah's statement that the Chief Minister was keen on keeping infiltrators in the state to expand her vote-base.

"Everyone is welcome to our state and to enjoy the hospitality of our people. But please don't profess any divisive politics ... It will not work in Bengal," Banerjee said.

'Don't spread the religion of divisive politics'

Amit Shah was in Kolkata to address a seminar on the National Register of Citizens (NRC) at the Netaji Indoor Stadium. During his address, he took a jibe at Mamata Banerjee over her 'No NRC in Bengal' comment and said that “People in Bengal are being misled about NRC and I have come here to clarify our strategy on the NRC. I have come here, to tell you the truth. Mamata Banerjee has been saying that if NRC is implemented then Hindu refugees will have to leave the country. There is no greater lie than this.” He further said that we will not let any infiltrator stay in India.

The remarks of Amit Shah left Banerjee infuriated and she urged him to not spread the religion of divisive politics.

"Please don't spread the religion of divisive politics. Please don't create rift among people. Bengal is known to respect leaders of different faiths for ages. This can never be spoilt," she said inaugurating a community puja in south Kolkata.

Mamata Banerjee on NRC, then and now

Recalling a Parliament session from August 2005, where Mamata Banerjee dramatically flung papers at the Speaker while opposing illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, Amit Shah accused Mamata Banerjee of taking an exact opposite stand on infiltrators now, for the sake of vote-bank politics.

Mamata Banerjee, as an Opposition Parliamentarian, back in 2005 stated that 'infiltration into Bengal has become a disaster now' and also called it a 'very serious matter'. In 2005, the Left party was a dominant force in West Bengal, till Mamata ended its reign in 2012.
