Massive protests broke out at the Manipur University on Wednesday after the students and police collided. The students have been on a peaceful hunger strike since September for the fulfillment of their demand to release the students and faculty members who were arrested during a raid at midnight in September by the local police. Some of their demands are:

  • Unconditional release of the 90 students and six faculty members who were detained by the police during a midnight raid on September 20.
  • Full-time Vice-Chancellor and registrar at the university campus
  • A judicial enquiry into corruption allegation against their former VC AP Pandey

Since their demands have still not been catered by the college administration, they took the decision in their own hands to talk to the VC. Things went out of control at the campus when the students were on their way to meet Pro-Vice-Chancellor Y Yugindro Singh and they were forcefully stopped by the police midway. As the agitation increased, police resorted to using tear gas shells and lathi charge at the students to disperse the angry mob.

The situation at the Manipur University has worsened following the case of the former VC AP Pandey who was suspended after he faced allegations of corruption and misappropriation of office.

While Yugindro Singh was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor in-charge, students did not accept his appointment. Following the appointment of Yugindro Singh, a team of police officers raided the university hostel and the residential quarters around 1 AM on September 20 and took the students and the teachers into custody based on a complaint filed by him. Later on September 22, students had protested against his appointment as the Interim Vice Chancellor of Manipur University. During the time, mobile internet services were also suspended in the state for five days to avoid circulation of "misinformation and rumours" over the incident.
