Close to 2.000 doctors have been protesting after the physical assault of an intern doctor at the NRS Medical college by the family of a patient who had died on Monday. Junior doctors across the city including private firms extended their support for the protest, bringing the out-patient departments of many hospitals to a standstill.

Mamata Banerjee had addressed the protest earlier on Thursday where she warned the doctors to resume their duties within the next four hours and threatened to have their hostels vacated if they refused to do so. She called the matter a conspiracy by the BJP and the Left.

The protesting medical professionals have now hardened their stand.

Continuing their protest, the doctors have said they cannot work if they don't feel safe. They have demanded proper security at their workplace and justice for the intern doctor who suffered the physical assault.

Below are their demands:

  • Those responsible for attacking doctors should be arrested.
  • There should be non-bailable warrant against those who attack the doctors.
  • There should be a judicial inquiry into the incident
  • There should be proper security arrangements - such incidents happen twice or thrice a year in every medical college
  • The government should ensure such incidents don't repeat, want a Governing Body that ensures that all times that the promises made by the government are fulfilled permanently
  • They want to speak to the West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi after the Banerjee threatened them
