On Thursday, Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale gave a detailed briefing about PM Narendra Modi's US visit in September. PM Narendra Modi's visit to US will begin from Houston, Texas followed by the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The key highlights from his visit are multilateral engagements at the UN, bilateral visit and interaction with business community and the Indian diaspora. Other important events include PM Modi being awarded the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for his Swachh Bharat movement and commemoration of Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birthday anniversary at the UN.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi will make a visit to the US from the late afternoon of 21 September until the forenoon of 27 September. And the two cities on his itinerary are Houston in Texas and then in New York where the United Nations General Assembly are located. The visit has three main pillars to it- first, multilateral engagements at the UN, second, the bilateral component of the visit in US states covering political meetings, interaction with the business community and with the Indian diaspora and thirdly the bilateral meetings he will have with world leaders in NY. 

"PM Modi's first next stop is Houston, Texas and he goes straight to a business meeting. His very first engagement is a round table with several chief executives in the energy sector, companies like BP, Exxon Mobile and so on. Energy is a new component in the Indo- US trade. This is also to show that we are an important market and also to discuss investment and possibilities in other economic areas."

MEA's detailed briefing on PM Modi's US trip

"On the 22nd of September, the highlight would be the Prime Minister's address to the Indian community. We will be expecting 50,000 people from diaspora. We are delighted that President Trump, as well as senior democratic leaders, will also be there. This includes several important US Congressional members. Their presence shows the bipartisan support Indian diaspora enjoys in the US. PM is expected to have a separate interactive session with US Congress members after which he will leave for New York. On 23rd, PM Modi has several multilateral events in NY including Climate Summit at UN, he is an early speaker and he will show what India has done about the pressing issue of climate change and expectation and aspiration from the international community. He will also attend UN Secretary General event on healthcare where PM Modi will be showing Ayushman Bharat in the event. The third event is the Leaders' Dialogue on strategic responses to terrorist and violent extremists narratives hosted by King of Jordan, UN Secretary General, President of France, PM of NZ, there will be other selects world leaders as well.

"On 24th September, in the late afternoon, we organise our event to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, in the UN. This event is titled 'Leadership matters: Relevance of Gandhi in contemporary times'. We are delighted that the Prime Minister will be joined by some heads of government, these include President of the Republic of Korea, PM of Singapore, PM of New Zealand, PM of Bangladesh, PM of Jamaica as well as the UN Secretary General.

PM Modi to receive Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's 'Global Goalkeeper's Award'

"Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's 'Global Goalkeeper's Award' is given every year to a world leader for achievement in a specific sustainable development goal. This year Gates Foundation is honouring PM for his leadership in the field of sanitation through Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Three launches are going to be done at this event. First, Gandhi Solar Park which is the installation of solar panels on the roof top of UN HQs in New York from a grant of $ US 1 Million that India has given to promote renewable energy and showcase our commitment to using of solar energy.
