A Meghalya High Court judge stoked controversy after he wrote in a judgment that India should have been a 'Hindu nation' after the partition, and that under no circumstances should the country be made an 'Islamic country'.

While taking up the case of a man related to permanent residence certificate, Justice SR Sen said that India is a secular country with different religions, but should have been a 'Hindu country'.

"Pakistan declared themselves as an Islamic country and India since was divided on the basis of religion should have also been declared as a Hindu country but it remained as a secular country. I make it clear that nobody should try to make India as another Islamic country, otherwise it will be a dooms day for India and the world," his judgment read.

His words drew strong reactions from a number of political leaders. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi critcized Justice Sen for his remarks, and said that the country was built by the constitution provided by Babasaheb Ambedkar, and not by the majority.

Former J&K CM and NC chief Farooq Abdullah also expressed his displeasure by the judgment of Justice Sen. He expressed that India is a secular country, and will remain so no matter what.

"It's a secular country, will remain secular & those who want to talk anything else, it's a democratic nation, they can say what they like, but it won't make any difference. We are a secular nation. Our forefathers made it a secular nation, and we must protect the secular charater of this nation. It's a question of unity in diversity," he told ANI.
