Missionaries of Charity issues statement on 'Baby-selling racket', says "individual actions have nothing to do with Congregation of MoC"

Days after Republic TV accessed the ‘BABY SALE CONFESSION TAPES’ exposing the involvement of nuns and a staffer of Missionaries of Charity in the child-selling racket, Nirmal Hriday, the charity home has issued a statement on the issue. While condemning the actions of the sisters of the charity, the MoC said the deeds of the accused have “nothing to do with the Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity”.

Days after Republic TV accessed the ‘BABY SALE CONFESSION TAPES’ exposing the involvement of nuns and a staffer of Missionaries of Charity in the child-selling racket, Nirmal Hriday, the charity home has issued a statement on the issue. While condemning the actions of the sisters of the charity, the MoC said the deeds of the accused have “nothing to do with the Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity”.

The statement also confirmed that Sister Concelia, the main accused in the case, was appointed as “the sister-in-charge of the ‘unwed mothers’ section at Nirmal Hriday.” It also said that Amina, the other accused, assisted Sister Concelia and when “Sr. Concelia MC got engaged in pressing responsibilities, Anima would escort the unwed mothers, their babies and their guardians to Sadar Hospital”.

The statement also repeatedly asserted that the criminal actions of the nuns had nothing to with the Missionaries' work and that it follows the “footsteps of our foundress St. Mother Teresa is caring for the poor. destitute and the afflicted since 1950.”

Republic TV, recently, accessed 10-tell all-clips, encompassing the confessions of those inside Missionaries of Charity on how they operated. The clips included three characters- the nun who sold the newborn children, the nun who the baby sellers confessed to and the missionaries of charity staffer who oversaw the deal.

The Missionaries of Charity is facing several allegations of selling newborn babies. While the allegation is that the Missionaries of Charity in Jharkhand was unable to provide the records of 280 babies at its various homes, fast emerging facts in the case reveal the possibility of a mega racket which could extend to even foreign money and foreign forces at play.

As per reports, 450 pregnant women were brought to Missionaries of Charity hospitals, but the organisation founded by St. Mother Teresa could furnish only childbirth records of 170 babies which means that the records of a whopping 280 newborns in India are untracked to this point. According to the police, the racket involved the illegal trade and trafficking of children
