Mizoram Health minister Dr. R Lalthangliana on Saturday said that modern medical science has made it possible to treat Alzheimer patients in a meaningful way. Lalthangliana addressing was a function on the occasion of the World Alzheimer's Day emphasised on the need to establish a good mental hospital in the state.

The minister said the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's disease would be easier if the state has a good mental hospital. World Alzheimer's Day was observed in Aizawl on Saturday in a function organised jointly by the ARDSI Mizoram Chapter and the National Mental Health Programme (NMHP).

September: World Alzheimer's Month

World Alzheimer's Month is the international campaign every September to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia. September 2019 will mark the 8th World Alzheimer's Month. The campaign was launched in 2012: World Alzheimer's Day is on 21 September each year.

2 out of every 3 people globally believe there is little or no understanding of dementia in their countries. The impact of World Alzheimer's Month is growing, but the stigmatisation and misinformation that surrounds dementia remain a global problem, that requires global action.

What is Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer’s is a degenerative disease of the brain. It slowly degrades brain cells (neurons) - the disease often goes unnoticed until significant damage has occurred. According to Alzheimer’s Disease International, a group of more than 80 Alzheimer’s associations in the world, it takes about 20 years before an Alzheimer’s patient starts to show symptoms. Most people just live with this disease, unaware.
