On September 20, multiple reports of an unknown odour caused Social media users to debate whether a gas leak had taken place at the nearby chemical fertilizer plant. Officials, however, remained clueless and could not provide any answer on where the stench originated from. The civic body asserted that a meeting of senior officials would take place to discuss the issue of a possible gas leak.

Gas leak in Mumbai?

In the wee hours of September 20, residents from Mumbai's western and eastern suburbs complained of an unknown odour late Thursday night which prompted rumours of a gas leak in Chembur at the Rashtriya Chemical Fertiliser's Plant. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has said that the odour was reported from Powai, Chembur, Mankhurd, Govandi, Andheri, Chandivali, and Ghatkopar areas. An official from the BMC stated that fire engines have been deployed at Deonar, Mankhurd, Chembur, Vikhroli, Dindoshi, Vile Parle, Kandivali, and Dahisar. The Police officials have confirmed that there have been no reports of injuries.

State of confusion over the unidentified 'gas leak'

Fire engines were sent to the various place to find out the source of the leakage. A spokesperson of the fire brigade stated that the unknown odour was also reported from areas adjoining Sanjay Gandhi National Park, in northern suburb Borivali. Nine fire engines were sent to places across the city to find out the source of leakage according to the officials. The Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has also notified that it had received complaints of gas odour from parts of Mumbai late Thursday night.

'Our emergency teams reached the sites from where the complaints were received. So far, we have not come across any breach in our pipeline system which could result in leakage of gas.' the MGL said.
