Mumbai loses its canine clean-up volunteer, activist laments demise
Lawyer-activist Afroz Shah who is known for his beach clean-up campaigns in Mumbai mourned the loss of a four-legged volunteer Diesel who passed away recently

Lawyer-activist Afroz Shah who has been hailed for his beach clean-up campaigns in Mumbai mourned the loss of a four-legged volunteer. Shah said that the canine called Diesel would clean the beach with the rest of the volunteers. Diesel would run towards plastics on the beach and bring it back further into the shore. Afroz Shah tweeted several pictures of the canine volunteer.

About lawyer-activist Afroz Shah
In 2016, Shah was awarded the United Nations (UN) top environmental honour Champions of the Earth award for his efforts in cleaning the Versova beach. The lawyer-cum- environmentalist was the first Indian to win the award. Versova beach, which is located in north-western Mumbai, earlier was one of the dirtiest beaches in the city. Following Afroz Shah's cleanliness drive, the beach received a makeover. Shah's clean-up drive earned PM Modi's praise. "Once considered as the dirtiest beach, it has now become clean and beautiful. All credit goes to Versova Resident Volunteers. It has turned into a mass movement. I heartily congratulate Afroz Shah ji and his entire team for their efforts in cleaning Mumbai's Versova beach. UNEP also facilitated him for his endeavors," Prime Minister said in his 32nd edition of Mann Ki Baat address in 2017.

The effort took 85 weeks. The beach was cleaned with the help of several volunteers and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The Centre's Swach Bharat Abhiyaan, is a campaign India to clean streets, roads, infrastructure, etc across the country. The campaign was officially launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 2, 2014 at New Delhi's Raj Ghat. The campaign has seen massive participation leading to a cleaner India.
