Navroz Mubarak: Parsi community celebrate their New Year, wishes pour in from all over

August 17 marks the beginning of a new year for the Parsi community. Known as Navroz or Nowruz, the event is considered to date back to almost 3,000 years and is sought to be the beginning of the Parsi calendar.

Known to be the single largest group of the Zoroastrian religious community, this day is of vital significance for the Parsis. While Zoroastrians across the world celebrated their New Year March 21, closer home the community is celebrating Navroz on August 17. While the community reveled in their merrymaking, greetings poured in from celebrities across all domains sending in their heartfelt wishes for the community.

From Politicians Smriti Irani, Home Minister Amit shah to celebrities like Sachin Tendulkar and Amitabh Bacchan also took to Twitter to extend their warm greetings for the community,

While on a two- day visit to Bhutan, Prime Minister Modi also took out time from his busy schedule to wish the community on this happy occasion.

In India, majority of the Parsi community resides in Mumbai and Gujarat, where a regional holiday is observed on this day. Since people in India and Pakistan follow the Shahenshahi calendar, which does not take into account leap years, the Parsi New Year is celebrated in these countries about 200 days after it is celebrated across the world.
