NHRC takes suo muto cognisance of shocking embankment cave-in deaths of 10 women in Telangana's Narayanpet, seeks answers from KCR government

Following the deaths of ten women enrolled under a MGNREGA scheme in Telangana's Narayanpet due to an embankment cave-in, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sent notice to Telangana government.

Following the deaths of ten women enrolled under a MGNREGA scheme in Telangana's Narayanpet due to an embankment cave-in, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sent notice to Telangana government.

The ghastly incident had taken place on Thursday, following which it was reported in various media, and subsequent to this, the National Human Rights Commission took suo moto cognizance and sent a notice to the Chandrashekar Rao-led government in the state. In its notice, the Commission has sought an answer from the KCR government about the safety preparations at the MGNREGA work sites. 

The women were among 100 people engaged in digging a canal in Tileru village in Narayanpet district under MGNREGA - the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme. The women had been resting under the embankment when it caved-in, as per accounts. Five others were also injured in the accident. Their fellow workers tried to rescue them but by the time they cleared about five feet of mud and pulled them out, it was too late.

A case was registered in the nearby Marikal Police Station after the incident and police said that they had initiated an investigation into how the embankment collapsed.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao expressed shock and anguish over the incident. In a message, he stated that the deceased belong to the poorest strata. Expressing deep condolences, the CM has instructed the relevant minister and officials concerned to accord immediate care in all manner. He has also announced that proper compensation will be given to the victim's family and also directed the police to investigate in the issue further.
