Senior Congress leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister M Veerappa Moily on Friday asserted that the possibility of Rahul Gandhi continuing as the party president is very slim.

The veteran Congress leader said that Rahul Gandhi is firm on his stand and is holding on to his decision to resign from his post. However, Moily assured that the Congress Working Committee (CWC) will decide on the matter and come up with a concrete solution to pave the way ahead for the Congress Party which faced a humiliating defeat in the recent Lok Sabha polls.

"Today, I don't think there may be even one percent possibility of Rahul Gandhi coming back. CWC will definitely meet before they consider any other name. Unless his resignation is accepted by CWC, speculations and his assertions will go on," said Moily

As the situation gets serious within Congress Party, the former Chief Minister also showed uncertainty and said that anything can happen:

"Anything can happen," said Moily, who has also in the past held portfolios like Law and Justice, Petroleum and Natural Gas and Corporate Affairs during the Congress-led UPA regime.

However, Veerappa Moily refused to comment on any other matters including the appeal made by some of the Congress leaders to Rahul Gandhi to let his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra take over the reins.

"I would like to wait for the CWC to take appropriate next step," he said.

Earlier, on June 13, Congress workers from Uttar Pradesh had also demanded that Congress should project Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as CM face ahead of Assembly election in the state.

Moily had last week said that the Congress needs a "major surgery" in the wake of the Lok Sabha poll debacle. The veteran Congress leader said that party President Rahul Gandhi must hold elections at every level and quell internal bickering with an 'iron hand'. He emphasized that Gandhi alone can lead the party. He also added that Rahul Gandhi took over the Congress leadership in 2017 and quit after being at its centre for only about one and a half years. Moily asserted that he must be given a substantial time to prove himself. Pointing out to the upcoming elections in Jharkhand, Maharashtra and Haryana, Moily urged that Rahul Gandhi should immediately step up.
