Rahul Bose recently got a taste of unreasonable pricing at the JW Mariott hotel in Chandigarh. Bizarrely, Bose was charged Rs. 442 for two bananas after which he was left baffled. Soon after the tweet went viral, the excise team launched a probe at the hotel and as per ANI, the luxury hotel has been fined Rs 25,000 for violation of Section 11 of CGST, which is an illegal collection of tax on an exempted item.
Taking a crack at the same, Former J&K CM Omar Abdullah tweeted saying that the excise team has charged Rs 12,500 per banana.
For the uninitiated, after the tweet went viral, a team of members visited the luxury hotel after which a full-fledged probe was launched.
After the tweet went viral, the Excise and Taxation Department sent a three-member team and seized all records in connection with the exorbitant GST rates charged by the hotel. Reportedly, the City Deputy Commissioner and the Taxation Commissioner Mandip Singh Brar ordered a probe into the matter after which the team paid a visit to the hotel. The officials have stated that it is not only a case of 'illegal and exorbitant charge of GST' but it is also a violation of the Consumer Protection Act.
