One Crore LED street lights installed in the country as a part of SLNP

In a massive achievement, the number of street lights installed in the country reached ‘one crore’ this week. This has also led to a reduction in carbon emissions per year by 4.6 million tonnes. According to a government statement, 6.17 billion kilowatt-hours of energy were saved across India. This has also led to the saving of Rs 5570 crores per year.

2.7 lakh km of roads across the country illuminating

The Street Lighting National Programme began in 2015 and was the largest streetlight replacement programme implemented. The streetlights are now illuminating 2.7 lakh km of roads across the country resulting in energy savings. The programme was implemented under the administration of Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) which is a part of the administration of the Ministry of Power. The aim of the programme that was launched in 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was to replace 1.34 crore conventional street lights by March 2019. The Ministry of Power also shared the update on Social media.

Andhra Pradesh leading with 28.9 lakh LED's installed

Andhra Pradesh has the highest number of LEDs installed.“Under SLNP, Andhra Pradesh is leading the way amongst the states, with an installation of 28.9 lakhs LED streetlights followed by Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh with 10.3 Lakhs and 9.3 lakhs respectively. As on date, 1,502 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) across India have been enrolled under the programme and out of these ULBs, work has been completed in around 900 Urban Local Bodies," EESL said in a statement.

SLNP aims to replace 1.34 crore conventional streetlights in India

The SLNP aims to replace 1.34 crore conventional streetlights in India. “By March 2020, SLNP aims to replace 1.34 crore conventional streetlights in India with smart LEDs. This ambitious goal will make a tremendous difference, enabling peak demand reduction of about 1500 MW, annual energy savings of 9 billion kWh, and reduction in 6.2 Million tons of CO2 per year. EESL has an ambitious plan in this portfolio for the next 4-5 years where it intends to bring investment to the tune of Rs8000 crore by 2024 by covering entire Rural India. It is expected that more than 30 million LED streetlights would be retrofitted/installed by EESL," it said in another statement.
