Actress Payal Rohatgi, who has been in the news a lot of late, has gone viral once again, this time, for her placard post in support of the Modi government's move on Thursday to move a Triple Talaq ordinance making the practice a punishable offence.

Taking to social media, Rohatgi shared a picture of herself holding up a placard that reads:

70 years of Independence,
Treated like an Object,
Replaced without Notice,
Divorced Orally by Husband,

The picture was written about and shared copiously on social media, and so was her accompanying tweet, which contained an unsubstantiated attack on the Congress and is not reproduced here.

This is hardly the first time that Rohatgi has taken on the Congress. Her most recent tweet at the time of publishing entails her talking about the Rafale deal, over which the Congress has been claiming 'scam'. She has also been in controversy on other occasions in the past few months.

On Wednesday, in a sensational development amid the legislative deadlock over the Triple Talaq Bill, the union cabinet approved an ordinance for the same, which was recommended by the Government of India to the President who promulgated it. The said ordinance made the instant Triple Talaq a criminal offence.

The Triple Talaq Bill came as a result of the Supreme Court of India's landmark judgment holding the practice as unconstitutional and seeking legislation on the matter. However, over two sessions of Parliament, while the bill was passed in the Lok Sabha, in the Rajya Sabha, it was met with significant opposition. Opposition parties have taken issue with the criminal provisions in the bill, specifically with regards to sending the person who gives Triple Talaq to jail.

The fact that the ordinance has been moved is a signal of the Modi government's intent to pass the bill in the upcoming winter session of Parliament. An ordinance lapses in six months and needs to be re-promulgated.
