Vishwesha Theertha, the seer of Pejawar Mutt in a convention that was held in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka recently has demanded the resignation of BJP MPs if the saffron party does not succeed in constructing the Ram Mandir in its tenure.

The seer said, “Congress party is not opposing Ram Mandir. Whoever is opposing the move will face the wrath of devotees. BJP MPs must be prepared to resign for the cause.” The seer backed the ordinance route to enable the construction of the temple.

Although many MPs have been backing the 'Mandir Demand' very few have agreed with the resignation call given by the Pejawar mutt seer. Sources say that Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel agreed with the seer's demand whereas others seemed to be silent about it.

BJP leaders have been rallying in favour of the devotees who have been demanding the construction of a Ram Mandir at Ayodhya in Madhya Pradesh at the earliest. The saffron party had also made a mention of it in its manifesto for Uttar Pradesh but as the momentum builds many seers have expressed confidence on the BJP. But as time runs out opposition party’s have lashed out at the BJP calling it's stance to be a farce in order to gain votes just before the Lok Sabha polls.

“Mandir Card=Political Opportunism”

The JD(S) slammed BJP for playing the ‘Mandir Card’, “The seer’s statement is apt. BJP has been playing politics over the Ram Mandir issue for a long time. BJP MPs must definitely quit if their party fails to keep its word. This tactic by the BJP won’t help garner votes down South. Everytime before the elections BJP has been using the mandir issue as a trump card. BJP MPs must adhere to Pejawar seer’s demand if they are really committed to the construction of Ram Mandir”- “Arivlagan, Spokesperson, JD(S).

“Resignation To Gain Sympathy”

Political analyst Abdul Razack Khan said, “This is a different type of politics. What difference will it make if BJP MPs resign with just few months to go for the polls? This posturing is just to gain the sympathy of Hindu voters. BJP has failed to keep up its promise on the development and that’s the reason why they are taking up the Mandir issue. They could have built the mandir in 2014 when they came to power. What stopped them? How many times has Modi visited Ayodhya before the polls? This shows their seriousness about constructing Ram Mandir. They have been using the Mandir card ever since the 90s and this is not new. When the matter is in front of the Supreme Court why do they want to politicise it?”

With Lok Sabha polls around the corner, the BJP has a lot riding on the mandir issue. The opposition has meanwhile remained divided. But it will be interesting to note if the these developments will have any bearing on the voters. And the political party’s, on the other hand, will engage in slugfests and try every method in the book to gain political mileage out of it.
