Piyush Goyal given temporary charge of Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Ministries

Railways and Coal Minister Piyush Goyal on Wendesday was given the additional portfolios of Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs for an interim period during the indisposition of Arun Jaitley.

President Ram Nath Kovind, after advice from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, assigned charge of the respective Ministries to Piyush Goyal, who had also taken over the same for a brief period in 2018.

Following is the press release which was given on this notification:


The President of India, as advised by the Prime Minister, hereby directed that during the period of indisposition of Shri Arun Jaitley, Minister; the portfolios of Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs held by him, be temporarily assigned to Shri Piyush Goyal, in addition to his existing portfolios.

Further, as advised by the Prime Minister, Shri Arun Jaitley be designated as Minister without portfolio during the period of his indisposition or till such time he is able to resume his work as Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs.


This is the second time that Piyush Goyal has assumed the Finance and Corporate Affairs Ministries Arun Jaitley's stead. The previous occasion had come in 2018 when Jaitley had been on medical leave.

Since then Piyush Goyal has regularly issued statements on economic matters, most notably when he had hailed the Modi government over balancing inflation and growth, and also when he had spoken about a possible alternative use for the RBI's excess capital reserves.

Goyal had also tweeted about the stand-off between RBI and the Centre that happened in December

The present Modi government is expected to present its last budget - a vote-on-account - on February 1.
