Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 29 addressed the nation about the situation prevailing due to coronavirus outbreak in his radio programme 'Mann Ki Baat'. This was third time PM Modi was speaking about coronavirus crisis. This was Modi's first ‘Mann Ki Baat’ show since the nationwide lockdown began from 25th March. Modi discussed the issue with the survivors of the coronavirus, doctors. He saluted the health workers for their role in fighting coronavirus. 

He said: "There are many soldiers who are fighting Coronavirus, not from their homes but from outside their homes. These are our front line soldiers-especially our brothers and sisters on duty as nurses, doctors & paramedical staff."

The Prime Minister also apologised for the inconvenience caused due to lockdown. "The battle against COVID-19 is a tough one and it did require such harsh decisions. It is important to keep the people of India safe. My apologies to the poor for the hardships due to the coronavirus lockdown. I apologise for taking these harsh steps which have caused difficulties in your lives, especially the poor people. I know some of you would be angry with me also. But these tough measures were needed to win this battle," he said.

Coronavirus in India

As of March 29, India has reported  898 cases so far, and 19 deaths. To tackle the growing cases, Prime Minister Narendra Modi imposed a nationwide lockdown for 21 days. The highest number of cases have been reported from Maharashtra - 186 cases and Kerala - 182 cases.

Prime Minister Modi established a dedicated national fund with the primary objective of dealing with any kind of emergency or distress situation, like posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and to provide relief to the affected, a public charitable trust under the name of ‘Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund’ (PM CARES Fund).
