PM Modi seconds Arun Jaitley as GST's rollout completes 2 years, calls it a great example of cooperative federalism that helped fulfil a dream

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) with the motto of 'one nation, one tax' has completed two years it roll-out on July 1, entering into its third year. Taking to Twitter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi replied to former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley's blog on the completion of two years of GST and said that it is a major reform that fulfilled the dream of 'One Nation, One Tax'.

He further said that 'introduction of GST remains a great example of cooperative federalism'.

PM Modi, in his tweet, went on to congratulation everyone who made GST possible and constantly took feedback to make it more people-friendly, as the taxation policy completed two-years of its introduction in the Indian economic structure.

In his blog on Monday, former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, under whose leadership the GST was introduced, also spoke about the GST Council as India’s first statutory federal institution in which the Centre and the states jointly sit and decide to create one common market.

Arun Jaitley chaired the GST Council for two years (2017-2019) under the first PM Modi-led government. 

Sharing his own experience while chairing the GST Council as the Finance Minister in Modi Cabinet 1.0, Arun Jaitley said that it was Finance Ministers’ of States, notwithstanding the political position their parties take, who displayed a high level of statesmanship and acted with maturity. 

The current GST council is being chaired by former Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman who took as the Finance Minister under Modi Cabinet 2.0, along with BJP MP Anurag Thakur as the Union Minister of State for Finance.
