Dr Ananda Amritmahal, the principal of Sophia College, released a statement on the occasion as saying, "We at Sophia consider it a privilege to have been to have been awarded the RUSA grant. For over seventy-five years our mission has been women's education. We now see this as an exciting opportunity to empower our digital age learners through skill building and entrepreneurship development."

RUSA is a scheme developed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in 2013. This centrally sponsored scheme aims to improve the quality of higher education and bring about a transformation in this sector. It includes providing adequate opportunities for economically and socially backward classes as well as encourage the involvement of women, minorities and differently-abled people.

The program was developed, in particular, to empower autonomous college campuses by giving them ways to facilitate skill development as well as improve the infrastructure of such institutions.

Skill development has been a major focus area for the Modi government over the last few years, with the Skill India mission launched in 2015 coming to include initiatives such as the National Skills Development Mission - all aimed at vocationally upskilling Indians and bolstering their employability.

Sophia college will operationalise its cell by holding workshops and programmes such as tech and language labs for its students, and will also undertake outreach efforts.
