Addressing the nation on India's 73rd Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Thursday, made several landmark announcements which his government is currently working on its implementation, from New Delhi's Red Fort.
Taking pride in finally integrating India with the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A, he said that Indians can now say 'One nation One Constitution'.
"Our forefathers who wrote the Constitution during the time of Independence had to take a lot of tough decisions for the integration of India. But because of article 370 and 35A, there were a lot of hurdles. Today, as I address the nation from the Red Fort, every citizen can proudly say 'One nation One Constitution'," he said.
Expressing growing concern over population growth, he said:
"Population explosion is fatal for us and for our upcoming generation. Through self-inspiration, there is a small group that benefits his/her own family as well as the country as a whole. They stopped the population explosion, in one or two generations their family has gone to a different level altogether - they have acquired a good education, they got rid of diseases. We cannot leave a diseased society or an illiterate society. If our population is not healthy and not educated then neither the country is happy nor the family."
He went on to speak about the concept of 'One Nation' in a variety of spheres.
PM Modi said: "When I am addressing the nation on its 73rd Independence Day, I can proudly say that this country is One Nation, One Constitution, every Indian can say this today. Through GST we made one nation one tax. A few days ago, we made one nation one grid, similarly, we made one nation, one mobility card. Now we are discussing on one nation, one poll. So that one day, the dream of One Nation Best Nation comes true."
While many have cast dobts about India's slowing growth, PM Modi reaffirmed his government's aim of making India - A $ 5 Trillion economy.
"To some, the target of nearly doubling the size of the Indian economy to USD 5 trillion in five years may seem difficult. But when we have in five years (of BJP rule) added USD 1 trillion as compared to USD 2 trillion achieved in 70 years of independence, then this target is achievable," he said.
PM Modi announced that Rs. 100 lakh crore will be invested in infrastructure.
He said, "I always ask this question..can we not reduce the interference of Governments in people's lives? Let our people have the freedom to follow their own aspirations. Today according to the needs of the 21st century, modern infrastructure is being set up. We have decided to invest Rs 100 lakh crore on the country's infrastructure."
Making a mega announcement to strengthen the Indian Army, PM Modi said:
"Our forces are India's pride. To further sharpen coordination between the forces, I want to announce a major decision from the Red Fort: India will have a Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). It will provide effective leadership at the topmost level of the three forces."
Taking a firm stance against terrorism on a global scale, he said:
"India is fighting strongly against terror. Terrorism is against humanity and therefore all the humane forces around the world should come together to fight against terror. We must expose those who shelter terrorists, provoke terrorism and export terror. India is playing an active role in exposing them. When we fight against terror, we also think about the peace and safety of the entire sub-continent."
Speaking about the importance of water conservation, PM Modi said, "At many places, people not getting drinking water even today. We have to provide water to every house. I am announcing from the Red Fort that we will go ahead with 'Jal Jeevan Mission' to ensure that drinking water reaches every house in the country. The movement towards water conservation has to take place at the grassroots level."
