Even as the Congress has been mounting pressure on the NDA government over Rafale, Republic TV has learnt from top sources that an opposition leader that a top opposition leader held a secret meeting with an US Arms manufacturers in September 2017, after which the Rafale issue was picked up. As per sources, the meeting was held in America before the Gujarat elections, wherein this opposition leader met with a US manufacturer, along with three advisors. In the meeting, there was a discussion on a possible arms deal, told the sources.

The sources have also told Republic TV that the arms manufacturer in question has close links with Hillary Clinton. Republic TV has also learnt that this meeting happened on insistence of the opposition leader and that the arms manufacturer is Rafale’s US competitor.

Meanwhile, the ruling BJP and Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley have been targeted by the opposition parties over the Rafale deal. Recently, while escalating attack on Jaitley, Congress President Rahul Gandhi called the Rafale deal “the GREAT RAFALE ROBBERY”. He also asked for the formation of a Joint Parliamentary Committee to sort the issue out.

The Congress President’s scathing tweet triggered a Twitter war of sorts as within minutes of his tweets, BJP National President Amit Shah issued a rebuttal, saying, “Why wait 24 hours when you already have your JPC-Jhoothi Party Congress.” (His moniker for JPC).

Shah also claimed that Gandhi’s quote on Rafale varies from place to place, mentioning, “but the nation’s IQ is higher than yours”, suggesting that the nation can see through Gandhi’s claim.

Congress President’s tweet was a rebuttal to Arun Jaitley’s claim that that the Congress President has been quoting varied prices for the Rafale aircraft, highlighting Rahul Gandhi quoted "a price of Rs.700 Cr per aircraft in Delhi and Karnataka in April and May this year. In Parliament, he reduced it to Rs.520 Cr per aircraft, in Raipur he increased it to Rs.540 Cr."

Meanwhile, on August 22, Reliance Infrastructure, Reliance Defence and Reliance Aerostructure have slapped 'cease and desist' notices to Congress leaders for making "derogatory statements" against the company with regards to the deal between India and France to buy advanced fighter jets.

The Congress, in recent times, has intensified attack on the PM Modi government, claiming that the price of the deal has gone up under the NDA regime.
