President Kovind interacts with specially-abled children in New Delhi

The President of India Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday visited the Pt. Deendayal Upadhyaya National Institute for Persons with Physical Disabilities in New Delhi

The President of India Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday visited the Pt. Deendayal Upadhyaya National Institute for Persons with Physical Disabilities in New Delhi. This institute comes under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. President greeted the specially-abled children and their parents on the occasion of Diwali festival. The children were also presented with Aids and Assistive Devices on the occasion.

Later, the President also interacted with the faculty members of the institute. Heads of all three departments of the institute presented a brief description of their respective departments as to how the specially-abled patients are successfully treated at the institute.

Greatest Service to society

Addressing on the occasion, the President said "Serving the specially-abled is the greatest service to society as they are the creation of God." He said that the institute and its faculty members are doing a commendable job in providing proper treatment to the children and patients. Applauding them, he said that they provide not only physical treatment but psychological treatment also. He opined that he was feeling happy to celebrate the Diwali festival along with children and the faculty members of the institute.

Apart from the President, other officials such as Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Thaawarchand Gehlot, and Secretary of Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), Shakuntala Doley Gamlin were present. Also, Director of Pt. Deendayal Upadhyaya National Institute for Persons with Physical Disabilities, Smt. Smita Jayavant and senior officers of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment were present on the occasion.

About the institute

Pt. Deendayal Upadhyaya National Institute for Persons With Physical Disabilities is an autonomous organization under the administrative and financial control of the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India. The Institute for the Physically Handicapped came into being when the erstwhile Jawahar Lal Nehru Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and other allied institution run by the council for the aid of crippled and handicapped were taken over by the government of India on 22 May 1975 and converted into an autonomous body in 1976.
