President Kovind, PM Modi and other leaders pay tribute after DMK chief Karunanidhi passes away

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) supremo M Karunanidhi passed away at 6.10 pm on Tuesday, Chennai's Kauvery hospital announced in a statement, triggering an outpouring of grief among his supporters who had come from all across the state in light of the decline in his health.

Earlier in the day, a medical bulletin on Karunanidhi's health had cited a "significant decline in the clinical condition of Karunanidhi." It had added, "Despite the maximum medical support, his vital functions continue to deteriorate." 

Following the popular and experienced five-time former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's demise, a number of leaders, actors and other personalities, led by PM Modi and President Kovind, have expressed their condolences and paid tribute:

Kauvery hospital has been flooded by throngs of teary-eyed supporters and the DMK cadre. Karunanidhi was admitted to Kauvery hospital on July 28, following a drop in his blood pressure. Prior to being admitted, he was undergoing treatment at his Gopalapuram residence for fever due to Urinary Tract Infection.  

Since his being admitted to hospital, Karunanidhi had a number of high-profile visitors who had been received by his son and political heir MK Stalin and daughter Kanimozhi. The President of India, Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, union ministers Nitin Gadkari and Nirmala Sitharaman, Congress president Rahul Gandhi and many others had made their way to Kauvery Hospital.
