Prime Minister Narendra Modi urges water conservation, speaks on its criticality in development

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visted his Lok Sabha constituency of Varanasi on Saturday where, while launching the BJP's renewed membership drive, he addressed BJP karyakartas, going on to speak about water conservation and the government's measures towards 'Jal Shakti' in the context of Friday's Union Budget.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visted his Lok Sabha constituency of Varanasi on Saturday where, while launching the BJP's renewed membership drive, he addressed BJP karyakartas, going on to speak about water conservation and the government's measures towards 'Jal Shakti' in the context of Friday's Union Budget.

In his address, the Prime Minister was talking about making India a $5 trillion economy and on the topic of development, during the course of which the PM emphasised on the importance of water. Prime Minister Modi raised the ongoing issue of water crisis that has gripped numerous states in India. The PM said that a collective effort by all Indians has to be ensured when it comes to practices like water conservation.

Hence, he related to the government's efforts of bringing everyone under the umbrella of water conservation and said that:

"Efforts are being made to unite the whole country for water conservation and water harvesting."

The Prime Minister also pushed forth the facts and asserted that wastage of water is even more dangerous than unavailability of water. He said that water, whether it's used in households across the nation or for irrigation, must not be wasted.

"More than the availability of water, waste of water is a big problem. Hence, it is necessary to prevent wastage of water in household use or irrigation" he added

Further, PM Modi urged people to conserve water and engage in water harvesting. Speaking of this, he asserted that it is mandatory that water reaches everyone house and that all the citizens have access to water, also pointing out that women, who are often the ones who stand in long lines or have to travel long distances to get water for their households:

"It will benefit our mothers and sisters who suffer a lot to raise water," the Prime Minister said.

The Prime Minister also spoke about the new Ministry of Jal Shakti that was set up for addressing issues related to water. Showing his confidence in the proposal that was put forth for creating a national water grid, the PM said that the move will provide water to the affected regions in the country:

"I am sure that this kind of a system will provide adequate water to every region of the country which faces a shortage of water" he said

On Friday Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget 2019. The Jal Shakti Ministry, which is executing the government's mission to provide clean and piped drinking water to every household in the country, has been earmarked Rs 28,261.59 crore in the budget 2019-20.
