Update at 2:35 pm: Goods train has passed through the railway track as per railway officials. They have also said that a second goods train will also be sent within a few minutes. These good trains are passing on the track to resume other railways and they decided to avoid any untoward incidents.

Massive protests have broken along the railway tracks in Amritsar where the tragic train accident took place on the evening of Dussehra celebration at the Joda Phatak region. People in large numbers have moved to the train tracks, many of them not having to know the fate of their loved ones. The police force was deployed in large number in the area to prevent any casualties. 

In an interaction with Republic TV on Sunday, Railway Station Director, Amritsar, Amrit Singh revealed that it is the duty of the police officials to take the investigation and not the railways.

"Whenever there is an incident, we have to follow the procedures of legality. Law and order is not the subject of railways. We register the case for them to investigate and they take forward the case for further investigation," said the station director.

"The case was registered on the day of the incident. That was the documentation done on the day of the incident. I don't where the investigation has reached by now, but a cognizance is given about the incident has happened. GRP does not come under railways per say. Because, law and order is a state subject. Such legalities will happen as per the procedure. We do not have a say in that," he added.

On being questioned about Navjot Kaur Sidhu's statement claiming that it was the responsibility of railways to have been alert during the incident, he said, "The gateman is not liable because it does not come in the domain of his duties". 

Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh on Saturday, had called for a magisterial probe into the incident, while maintaining that nothing can be said about this matter till the inquiry is completed. An early investigation into the incident revealed that the function was held without taking permission from the proper authorities. Further, the event was hosted by a close aide of Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, with his wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu being the chief guest of the event. It all happened after the Dussehra fire started spreading and people started running helter-skelter for safety trampling each other. That is when they ran towards an onrushing train.
