Punjab anti-drug drive: Two apprehended in Amritsar with 12 kg heroin

According to officials, the police was able to seize 12 kg heroin from a village near the Indo-Pak border in Amritsar, Punjab, on Wednesday and also arrested two. According to Senior Superintendent of Police Vikramjit Singh Duggal, the accused, who have been identified as Gurpreet Singh and Gurpal Singh, belong to Rorawala village in Amritsar.

Could be a cross border trade case

According to the police, it appears to be a cross border trade and the consignment appears to have come from across the border and out for delivery while the duo was intercepted by the Police. An FIR by the Gharinda police has been filed against the accused. While further investigations are on to establish any possible national and international links in the case, it is also being suspected that more arrests are likely to happen in connection with the same.

Drive against drugs

The Amritsar police, as a part of their anti-drug strategy, has taken proper measures and have initiated thorough investigations for the ongoing drive against drugs. The drive is aimed at facilitating innovative strategies thereby cutting and curbing the drug supply to control the drug menace.

What might be seen as a partial success of the drive, the district police has, in the last five months, been able to seize more than 47 Kg of Heroin. Apart from Amritsar, cases have also come in from Ludhiana and Sultanpur Lodhi. The police have held two smugglers on the basis of information by the police of Anti Narcotics cell near village Ramgarh on Chandigarh Road in Ludhiana. However, a woman who was also seen with them is absconding.
