Superstar Rajinikanth has broken his silence over the raging statue politics that has witnessed the destruction of at least six statues in the last 60 hours in 5 different states.
Rajinikanth slammed BJP leader H Raja for his Facebook post on social reformer Periyar (EVR Ramasamy), which created a storm in Tamil Nadu.
“What H Raja spoke is barbaric and vandalising the Periyar statue is a barbaric act,” said Rajinikanth.
Raja in his FB post wrote that the statue of Periyar would be razed just like Vladimir Lenin's statue in Tripura. He later apologised saying that the post was done by one of the administrator of his page, without his permission.
Raja, in his now deleted Facebook post, wrote, "Who is Lenin and what is the connection between Lenin and India? What connection has India with Communists? Lenin's statue has been removed in Tripura. Today it is Lenin's statue in Tripura, tomorrow it will be the statue of caste fanatic EVR Ramasamy".
The condemnable actions of destroying statues began on Tuesday in Tripura as two statues of socialist-communist ideologue Lenin were demolished after the BJP unseated the long-running Left government in the North East state.
Also on Tuesday, a statue of Dravidian movement leader Periyar was vandalised in Tamil Nadu's Vellore. On Wednesday, apart from the incident in Kolkata described above, a statue of Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar was destroyed in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut. On Wednesday, Republic TV also accessed a video of a statue of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee being desecrated in Kolkata. On Wednesday night, a statue of Mahatma Gandhi was also damaged by a local in Kannur, Kerala.
The Prime Minister has condemned the vandalism while BJP party president Amit Shah has tweeted strongly against any member of his party indulging in such statue politics. The events have triggered a nationwide political debate.
