Nalini Sriharan, one of the convicts in the assassination case of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi has started a hunger protest in the Vellore Central prison demanding the release of all seven convicts in the case.

Nalini began the fast in solidarity with her husband Murugan who is on an indefinite hunger strike for the past nine days.

Nalini submitted a petition to Governor Banwarilal Purohit expressing disappointment over delay in making a decision to release the prisoners in the case who are in the jail for more than 27 years.

"I humbly take leave from the earth by going on fast from 9.02.2019, Saturday morning until I attain eternal bliss. Thank You and Good Bye", she wrote in the letter.

The Tamil Nadu government last year had taken a resolution to release the Rajiv Gandhi assassins & recommended the governor of Tamil Nadu Banwarilal Purohit to take a decision to release these 7 convicts who are in vellore central prison for 27 years by exercising article 161 special power which the governor has.

In her letter,Nalini said the Governor had not taken a decision on release of the convicts even after the state government recommended a premature release. She stated that they were forced to this situation due to delay in the Governor's decision.

Earlier, Mother of Perarivalan had written a letter to the governor to mercy kill her son, she told he can be rather killed than living alive in the prison after these many years.

Parties like DMK, MDMK, VCK & pro-Tamil groups protested against the governor in the last December, insisting the governor to take a decision soon in releasing the convicts. They also alleged that the governor is dancing to the tune of the center who already rejected the mercy plea of the 7 convicts.

Now, the only woman prisoner in the case & the longest-serving woman prisoner in the country has began her hunger protest inside the prison & have said she'll continue it until her last breath seeking the decision from the governor on the government's resolution to release the 7 convicts in premature.
