Hours after Republic TV's sensational newsbreak on Congress endorsing the Tukde Tukde Gang member and named in 2016 JNU Sedition case, Kanhaiya Kumar by inviting him to an event remembering Mahatma Gandhi on his 72nd martyrdom, the Rahul Gandhi-led party backtracked from its decision and removed Kumar's name from the invitation.
In the latest invitation to the event, released by the All India Congress Committee, Kanhaiya Kumar's named had been omitted.
Meanwhile, the likes of Congress leaders Priyanka Chaturvedi, Manish Tewari with RJD leader Manoj Jha and professor Apoorvanand are set to be the panellists at the seminar commemorating Mahatma Gandhi.
In the invitation released earlier, the Rahul Gandhi-led Congress party had invited Kanhaiya Kumar and Shehla Rashid as speakers at the event. The seminar is going to take place on January 28 in New Delhi.
On January 14, the Delhi Police filed 1200-page chargesheet in the 2016 JNU Sedition case in which Kanhaiya Kumar, along with Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya were named as main-accused in the case. Along with their names, seven other Kashmir residents from JNU, Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia were also named in the chargesheet. Kanhaiya Kumar and others have been accused in the matter relating to the events of February 9, 2016, when a programme was organised at the JNU premises to protest against the hanging of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat, during which multiple anti-national slogans were raised.
At the time, Kanhaiya Kumar and others had been arrested in the matter and later released on bail by the Delhi High Court. Around 95 witnesses gave their testimonies against the accused.
In the light of 2016 JNU Sedition case, Republic TV had also accessed a total of four videos from the chargesheet which proved that anti-national slogans were indeed raised by the accused at the event.
