  • During the session, both leaders advised each other on professional and personal aspects

On the second day of the inaugural Republic Summit 2018, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis and Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal addressed the gathering on the topic 'The synergy to surge'. During the session, both the leaders spoke on various issues including the progress of North East and the need for NRC to tackle the illegal migrant threat.

Later, on being asked to provide a piece of advice to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Assam CM spoke about the cordial relationships that the two BJP leaders share with each other.

"From the people of Assam, I would like to state that Maharashtra should provide for a market for the organic fruits and vegetable that are grown in Assam. Our people started growing organic fruits and vegetable after programmes started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He is largely accepted by the people of Assam and I would like him to continue working for the state also," said Sarbananda Sonowal

Adding to the Assam CM's advices, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis also spoke about initiatives taken by the state with NRC to tackle the problems of illegal immigrants in the country.

"Assam has taken a good step with the introduction of NRC in the state. While there can be criticism against it, you must continue working for it because it will protect the country and the people here," added Devendra Fadnavis.

On the topic of the illegal migrants, both the CMs of their respective states felt that it is an issue of national security, and leaders like West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee should not play vote bank politics on such matters.

Sarbananda Sonowal stated that illegal migrants are a national problem and a very important issue. He then went into explaining about the 1985 Assam accord, which was signed under then PM Rajiv Gandhi, but never gained momentum, which in turn kept the Indo-Bangla borders open. The Assam CM then went onto add that Mamata Banerjee does not know the ground reality and is just playing politics, while also mentioning that once NRC is implemented, it will help the government know who are the illegal immigrants.
