  • Other journalists were also attacked and pelted with stones
  • Republic TV's vehicle was attacked and equipment stolen

Republic TV's South Bureau Chief Pooja Prasanna her vehicle and crew were surrounded by an over 100-strong mob of men, some of whom were masked, at Nilakkal enroute Sabarimala, where the famed Sabarimala Temple is on Wednesday set to open its doors to all women devotees for the first time.

Visuals of the attack show the mob surrounding the car, shoving their faces into every window and the windshield, shouting loudly, making intimidatory gestures, and then, slamming the car from all sides.

After re-establishing contact with Republic TV's newsroom following the attack, Pooja Prasanna narrated her terrifying ordeal, and confronted 'Save Sabarimala' campaigner Rahul Easwar on his politics that facilitated such an attack. She also spoke of the helplessness of other journalists who also faced attack right in front of her.

"We are trying to get inside police station because there seems to be no place safe here. We were not at Sabarimala shrine. We were on our way to Pamba. We were at just stone thrown away from the location where the Congress party and BJP workers were protesting three days ago. I begged the mob to let go my driver and camera person because they had no role to play in this. At this point of time, they are safe and with us. I refuse to believe that this could not have been avoided. They broke down the law and order to such an extent"
