DMK supremo M Karunanidhi breathed his last at 6.30 pm on Tuesday at Kauvery hospital, Chennai, wherein he was shifted to on July 28, following a drop in his blood pressure. As a mark of respect Tamil Nadu government has allotted 2 acres plot at Gandhi mandapam for the DMK patriarch’s last rites. DMK cadre, however, wants burial at Anna memorial, Marina beach.

“We had met CM and submitted a request for a 'Samadhi' near Anna memorial, he had accepted our request then, but has not communicated anything in this regard till now, “said Durai Murugan,Senior DMK leader.

Meanwhile, as the nation is mourning the loss of one its greatest leaders, here’s where you can pay your last respects to Karunanidhi:

8:30 pm - 1 am: Gopalapuram residence

1am - 3am: CIT Colony residence ( Kanimozhi house)

4 am onwards: Rajaji Hall

Following the demise of Kalaignar, the Tamil Nadu Government declared public holiday for Wednesday and seven day mourning. Furthermore, M K Stalin in a statement has appealed to DMK workers to maintain peace and discipline,thanks doctors and the management of Kauvery Hospital.

Teary-eyed fans, supporters and well-wishers have been thronging outside the Kauvery hospital since the time the news of the decline in Karunanidhi's health broke.

Earlier on Tuesday, while issuing a press release, Chennai's Kauvery hospital announced the sad demise of "beloved Kalaignar".

Karunanidhi was admitted to Kauvery hospital on July 28, following a drop in his blood pressure. Prior to being admitted, Karunanidhi was undergoing treatment at his Gopalapuram residence for fever due to Urinary Tract Infection (UTI).

During Karunanidhi's stay at the hospital, a number of political leaders visited him to enquire on his health including the President and Vice President of India, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, Tamil Nadu CM Edapadi Palaniswamy and others.

Earlier on July 30, Tamil Nadu CM Edappadi Palaniswami addressed the media outside Kauvery hospital on Karunanidhi's health condition and said, "he is fine. His condition is stable".
