Rishi Kumar Shukla, IPS (MP:1983 cadre), has been appointed as Director CBI by the Appointments Committee of Cabinet for a period of two years. He succeeds interim CBI Director Nageshwar Rao and the earlier incumbent, Alok Verma. Shukla is the former Director General of Police (DGP) of Madhya Pradesh.

The following is the notification that has been issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DOPT):

Shukla's appointment concludes a frenetic few months of turmoil at the top of India's premier investigative agency, which began with the top two CBI officers - then Director CBI Alok Verma and Special Director Rakesh Asthana - respectively, levelling corruption allegations against one another. As a result of this, both officers were placed on indefinite leave by the government on the recommendation of the CVC (Central Vigilance Commission). Nageshwar Rao was appointed Interim Director CBI.

The move, which was also accompanied by the transfer of a number of other officers who were part of the probes that had been initiated against both Verma and Asthana, was followed by Alok Verma moving the Supreme Court against his being put on leave. The apex court, in its two-judge bench verdict, set aside the decision to send Alok Verma on leave, reappointing him as interim Director CBI, and tasked the Select Committee comprising the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and the Chief Justice of India to take a decision. The Select Committee then decided 2-1 to dismiss Alok Verma, with the Prime Minister and Justice Sikri (appearing on behalf of CJI Gogoi) voting in favour of removing Verma, while Mallikarjun Kharge voted in favour of him remaining. Nageshwar Rao was subsequently re-appointed interim Director CBI, following which the permanent appointment of Rishi Kumar Shukla has now taken place after two meetings of the Selection Committee.
