Samajwadi Party workers held a candle march and protest in Varanasi on October 10, protesting Pushpendra Yadav's encounter. Pushpendra Yadav was allegedly killed in an encounter by UP police. The police have maintained that Pushpendra Yadav was running an illegal sand mining business. He reportedly fired at the police inspector who had seized his truck used in the sand mining business a few days ago. He escaped after firing at the police, but the latter allegedly intercepted him at a crossing and shot him down when he refused to surrender and tried to fire again. The family members of the deceased alleged that it was not an encounter but murder by the police as they were demanding bribe from Yadav which he refused to pay and instead threatened to expose them.
