Maharashtra's Satara constituency became a battle of prestige between the newly inducted BJP's Udayanraje Bhosale and Sharad Pawar's NCP, which categorically favoured the latter. Opining over the same, Shiv Sena's Sanjay Raut asserted that the BJP candidate's defeat on the seat was 'imminent.'

BJP Maharashtra ally, Shiv Sena's senior leader Sanjay Raut said that people had already decided to oust those from politics who 'changed their side'. Udayanraje Bhosale, the descendent of Shivaji Maharaj and two-time NCP MP from Satara lost the by-poll on Thursday from the constituency. Bhosale had jumped from NCP to BJP weeks before the Maharashtra assembly polls scheduled on October 21.

Sanjay Raut said, "Udayanraje Bhosale (descendant of Shivaji Maharaj) changed his side before the elections, his defeat was imminent. If he had to join BJP, he should have done it earlier. People had already decided that those who change their side should not remain in politics."

Udayanraje Bhosale's loss

Udayanraje Bhosale was entailed to contest the Lok Sabha byelections for switching parties in Maharashtra's Satara, however, he lost the seat to Sharad Pawar's close-friend and NCP leader Shriniwas Patil by a massive margin of 87,717 votes. He had won the Lok Sabha 2019 elections on NCP ticket in Satara.

While many believe the electorate was unimpressed by the NCP-turncoat candidate, others have credited the victory to NCP patron Sharad Pawar's iconic drenched rally speech in Satara that went viral on social media, just days prior to the polling.

In September, Udayanraje Bhosale joined the saffron party in the presence of BJP president Amit Shah and Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. PM Modi had held a rally in Satara to campaign for the newly inducted party-member. Maharashtra's chief minister expressed his shock over the result.

After the Satara constituency winner was announced, addressing the media, Sharad Pawar thanked the voters and said, "Voters have not liked those who left their political parties and have been against those candidates. Everyone had their eye on the Satara Lok Sabha seat. He had not maintained the sanctity and respect of the prestigious position that came from Shivaji Maharaj's lineage. Thus, people gave their response."
